We partnered with the Department of Economic Opportunity, Los Angeles County to promote a year-long campaign that offers support to small-scale businesses. It’s not just about pushing shoppers to support local shops, it’s also about supporting the businesses as well. It helps the owners create websites, generates community outreach, and offers support with loan programs. Ultimately, it’s about putting money back into the community.

The design development began with looking at local signage around Los Angeles from grocery stores to neon signs to hand-painted murals. In the end, we gravitated towards a tactile approach to connect with the local, handmade quality of many of the shops we’re helping promote. We also wanted the community to feel a direct connection to the program and for the branding to have an artisanal, but approachable feel. We combined illustration along with ”Thank you bag” inspired fonts, reciept photography, along with sticker and button textures so that we leaned into the “thank you for shopping at” concept. We even created a mascot for the campaign - Baggins.

The result is a modern, but accessible and tactile branding that leans into small businesses and communities alike.

The program launch in May 2023 in Grand Central Market in Los Angeles was a huge success! We followed that up with a county-wide sweepstakes in November 2023 to help promote Small Business Saturday.
