Penny Dreadful

For the most recent incarnation of the Penny Dreadful franchise, we knew the vibe needed to be related to its predecessor, but different in execution and tone. This new vision from John Logan takes place in 1930s-era Los Angeles and deals with everything from gentrification to Santa Muerte to surf Nazis, all centering around a ritualistic murder.

It’s less reliant on past classic monster tropes and leans more into the idea that every human has a monster inside waiting to get out and burn down the world. To that end, we wanted to portray Los Angeles as a sort of beautiful hellscape. To do this, I went out to some of the shooting locations from the show like Malibu and Griffith Park and shot vistas during sunset. I captured fiery skies, circling ravens, the Griffith observatory, crashing waves and, of course, tons of palm trees. We composited the different elements together and speed ramped the footage to give the promos a creepier vibe.
